The pandemic year 2020 saw some new coinages aptly named as Corona Coinages.

Neologisms coined during corona pandemic are growing more and more popular. As the pandemic rages on taking new twists and turns, touching every life on the planet, we have some new and interesting Corona Slang words. Most of these are portmanteau words – combination of two or more words to get a new one. Corona has united the world by isolating people. Corona Slang has also united us as we find them interesting and funny. Corona virus could not stop us from being linguistically creative.

Some say that slang exists because we must come up with ways to define new experiences that have surfaced with time and modernity.  What better new experience than the pandemic of 2020 for the ‘rona’ slang?? The unprecedented 2020 bred many Corona related coinages and many interesting slang words.

Anti-masker

Anti-masker is a disparaging term for a person who opposes wearing a face mask during the COVID-19 pandemic. Public health experts strongly recommend wearing masks to prevent and slow the spread of the disease.

Bubble

Bubble refers to close contacts with whom we don’t use mask or maintain physical distancing. In strict lockdown, this means only the members of your own household.

The Before Times

a darkly humorous phrase with an air of science fiction: “the Before Time,” or alternatively “the Before Times. February or even March 2020 are before times, pre-pandemic – before masks or social distancing. Nostalgic indeed!

Coronasomnia

Quarantined alone or working from home? Worried about your job? Frightened of catching the ‘rona’? disturbed about when this will end? Whatever the reason, many of us are suffering from sleeplessness – coronasomnia – corona induced insomnia.

Coronababy

Babies conceived / born while people are cooped up at home during the coronavirus have been dubbed coronababies. And when these babies get older, they will become the quaranteens, a pun on quarantine and teen(ager).

The hypothetical new generation of children conceived during COVID-19 has cleverly been crowned the coronials, a play on corona(virus) and millennials.

Coronacation

Corona compelled vacation -  a prolonged period at home away from one’s normal place of work, study, etc. viewed as an obligatory holiday imposed by stringent COVID-19 restrictions.

covidiot

a person who flouts social distancing guidelines.

Coronacoaster

One of the many new COVID-inspired portmanteau coinages, it blends corona and rollercoaster to describe the emotional experience of life during the pandemic.

Coronacut

The hilariously bad haircut we give ourselves during lockdown.

Maskne

Maskne is acne or other skin irritation that results from wearing a mask, especially a medical, N95, or cloth face mask. This portmanteau of the words ‘mask’ and ‘acne’ trended during the outbreak of COVID-19 due to the widespread wearing of face masks to protect against the coronavirus. Maskne was especially prevalent among healthcare and other front-line workers.

 Quarantini

Quarantini is a slang term for a cocktail people drink at home while under quarantine during—and because of—the coronavirus. The original quarantini referred to a martini-like cocktail mixed with vitamin C-based dietary supplements—a concoction that predates the novel coronavirus.

Quaranteam

A mix of quarantine and team and sounds like quarantine.

A group of people who voluntarily choose to socialise with or stay together during quarantine. The many names used for such groups a germ pod, a COVID bubble, or quaranteam. The people in the quaranteam choose to isolate together, promising not to have close contact (within six feet) with anyone outside the bubble. This form of contact clustering (yet another term used by epidemiologists to describe the situation) lets people socialise while staying safe. 

Zoom-bombing

When using Zoom or similar services, be wary of Zoom-bombing. This is when uninvited guests to a virtual meeting disrupt it with various obscene, violent, or offensive images or words.

Here Bombing is based on photobombing, when people ruin a photograph by appearing in the image without the photographer’s knowledge, often in some dramatic or comical way.

Zoom fatigue

The exhaustion that sets in while living life over Zoom.
